Understanding Cough: When to Be Concerned

A cough is usually a protective reaction of the body to clear irritants, infections, or foreign particles from the airways. When you develop a cough, it is important to ask yourself a few questions:

  • When did the cough start?

  • Is it seasonal or related to allergies?

  • Is it associated with mucus (phlegm) production or is it a dry cough?

  • Is there an accompanying fever, sore throat, shortness of breath, or chest pain?

  • Does it improve with warm water or steam inhalation?

Most coughs related to common upper respiratory tract infections can be managed with adequate rest, warm fluids, steam inhalation, and avoiding known allergens or irritants. Antibiotics are generally not recommended for ordinary viral coughs and colds.

However, if the cough is associated with breathing difficulty, persistent high fever, chest pain, coughing up blood, or lasts for several weeks, medical attention should be sought without delay.

If in doubt, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for proper evaluation and treatment.
